The House Pub (Upstairs Lounge)
The Whipping Boys' Holiday Doo-Dah - two shows - 7PM & 9:30PM
16 S. 1st Avenue
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-945-3479
Price: $5

Some of you may know that this time of year, I'm usually guesting at Dick Smith's Hoo-Hah on December 23rd. Sadly, this year, there isn't going to be a Hoo-Hah (no room at the inn - or any of the usual venues). But weep not dear friends, because two of the Dicks (who are also the two Daves, Ramont & Nelson) have had a side-side-project called The Whipping Boys, and they're throwing a Doo-Dah. Normally, the Whipping Boys modus operandi is to play whatever songs the audience has requested. This year however, they have decided to flip the script and make the requests of their guest performers. Since 2016 has been such a year of loss for the music world, the Boys went with the theme "Songs o' the Dead," so expect a cavalcade of tunes from those who've left us this past year. Some holiday classics will be thrown in as well.

It's a Thursday night, probably going to be snowing, but it's not like you were really gonna get any work done on the 23rd. In fact, I'll be glad to write a note to your boss telling them why you can't make it in work on Friday.

Great live music, good friends, tasty grub, a full bar, and yet, NO COVER. Yes, it's going to be VERY VERY COLD, but please come on out anyway. We'd love to see you there! Oh, this is NOT a holiday show, so if you're already sick of holiday songs, you'll be pretty safe here.

Downtown Naperville
Naperville Wine Walk 2 - Electric Boogaloo Fall Edition - 1-3PM
corner of Jackson & Main
Naperville, IL
Price: The music is free, the wine will cost ya!

Another Wine Walk? Didn't we do this already? Yes we did, but it was so much fun we're doing it again. I'll be out on the streets playing my songs of misery and woe for the passers by. I'll be on the corner of Jackson & Main, by Dean's Fine Clothing. Here's hoping the rain holds off, or we'll all be inside somewhere nearby - still playing because if there's anything I learned from the Village People is that it's fun to stay at the YMCA. Wait, that's not it... Now I remember, it's that you can't stop the music. So come on out, check out Arranmore Arts website for ticket information (if you want to participate in the "wine" portion of the Wine Walk).

Dave Ramont's Scofflaws Birthday Party - 7:28PM
111 W Main St
St. Charles, IL
Price: $13 in advance/$14 at door

Hard to believe it's been 20 years since my friend Dave Ramont released his album Scofflaws, but that's what he's saying and I have no reason to doubt him. To celebrate this milestone, he's performing the album in it's entirety with most of the people who made it all those years ago - and that includes me. I'll be singing on a couple tunes with DR, and then in the second set, he's invited me to play one of my own tunes. I decided that for a special occasion I should do something special, so I'm going to play a brand new song (finished 7/24/16). And I might be popping in on some other folks' tunes as well.

It's going to be a fun night. Join us if you can.

Just added to this one. I'll be playing a little solo opening set before Teddy Thompson & Kelly Jones at my favorite place to play - SPACE! You might know Teddy from his excellent solo work or from his shows with his father, Richard Thompson. Teddy & Kelly have their first album, Little Windows, coming out just before this show, and judging from the first preview track, "I Thought That We Said Goodbye," it's going to be a stunner. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous harmonies and sweet, sad tunes - right up my alley!

30th Annual Hunger Walk - 10:05AM - 10:50AM
Chicago, IL 60601

On Saturday, June 20, thousands of men, women and children will gather on Chicago’s lakefront to raise funds and awareness for the fight to end hunger in Cook County. The Hunger Walk is a fun opportunity for all types of businesses, organizations and individuals to help ensure their neighbors get the food they need. Join the Greater Chicago Food Depository for the 30th Annual Hunger Walk at Soldier Field.

Last year, the 5K walk brought a record number of more than 14,000 people together and has grown into one of the largest hunger-relief events in Chicago - raising awareness and funds for the Food Depository’s network of 650 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Data shows more than 812,000 men, women and children living in Cook County - 1 in 6 people receive food from our network each year. Food pantries in our community are serving 70 percent more individuals than five years ago - making the funds raised at this year’s Hunger Walk more vital than ever.

Registration begins at 7AM, the Walk begins at 8:30AM and ends at 11AM.  I'll be playing from 10:05AM to 10:50AM. I'll be joined by the fabulous rhythm section of Chad Watson (bass) and Justin O'Connell (drums) - I'm borrowing them from the excellent band Noah's Arcade. Even if you don't want to do the walk, you can still donate!

Day of the Dowd! - 11AM-Midnight
6615 Roosevelt Rd
Berwyn, IL 60402
(708) 788-2118
Price: $30 adults/$15 kids
If you've heard my records, you already know Gerald Dowd is an amazing drummer. But you might not know that he's also a brilliantly talented singer and songwriter. His long awaited solo album, "Home Now," is coming out soon and to celebrate its release, he's asked a tiny percentage of the artists he's worked with to each play a 40 minute set (with him on the drums of course) and at the end of the evening, he'll step out from behind the kit and do a set of his own wonderful tunes. What's a "tiny percentage," you ask? Well, he's ONLY going to play drums for 16 bands before he does his own set. Yes, in case you didn't look at the show time, it's an all-day event! That's 16 bands, 13 hours, 1 drummer.
All ticket proceeds benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository (www.gcfd.org). Silent auction featuring items from the Chicago Cubs, Macy's, and others. Kids welcome all day with parent. Re-entry permitted with hand stamp or wristband (whichever they use), so you can pop out to grab some lunch or dinner (and apparently it's cool if you bring food in).
I'd be telling you to come even if I weren't playing, but luckily for you, I am! It's early, so don't be late. In addition to Mr. Dowd, I'll be joined for my set by two more crazily talented musicians - Scott Stevenson on keys and John Abbey on bass.
Band schedule (Club sets are *; other sets are in SideBar):

1935 Sheridan Road
Highland Park, IL
847-780-4015
Price: No Cover

The new year is nigh, and it's that time of the year that many people choose to make resolutions of things that they're going to do differently in 2014. And if I may be so bold, I have a suggestion for you - resolve to go and see lots of live music in 2014. Coming to this show at Vibe is the perfect way to begin.

This is my debut at Vibe, so it'd be great to have a lot of people there (so bring a friend or twelve). It's a cool place in Highland Park with a fantastic, err... vibe! They've got food, they've got drinks. I'll be playing originals (old favorites and new songs) and covers.

SEE YOU THERE!

The whole event is from 7-10PM and we'll probably do a couple of hour long sets. More details will get filled in in the coming weeks.

Evanston, IL 60202
USA
847-492-8860
Price: $30 GA seating/$20 standing room
Glen Phillips is the lead singer and songwriter for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket. They had some hits you may recall, such as "All I Want," "Walk On The Ocean," and "Fall Down." In between Toad's hiatus periods, Glen has kept himself busy with a string of fine solo albums as well as some other interesting side projects. I'll be opening up the show with a solo set. Tickets were already on sale when I was added to the bill, so unfortunately, the reserved table seating is all gone (well, there was 1 seat remaining at table 33 - right in the center, so if you're flying solo that night...). However, there is still general admission seating (meaning you get a seat, but not a specific one) and standing room available. This show is likely to sell out, so get your tickets soon.

Tommi Zender played electric guitar on "The Weight Of Things Unsaid" and he's played bass and sung backing vocals at the last couple of band shows I've done. He's also a mighty fine singer/songwriter in his own right as well and has got a monthly residency gig at Wishbone. He's asked me to be his special guest this month. We'll each play some stuff alone, and some things together - originals and covers. Not sure yet who is doing his 'Karaoke Challenge' this month, but it's always interesting. No cover, all ages. Wishbone has really good food and a full bar, so come hungry and thirsty.

The House Pub (Upstairs Lounge)
One Mike Stand - "Goodbye Butters" Edition - 7PM
16 S. 1st Avenue
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-945-3479
Price: no cover - must be 21 or over
Host Mike Alberts presents his "Ultimate One Mike Stand" - featuring myself, Dave Ramont, Gerald Dowd, Bob Kuhn, Greg Boerner, and Mike Alberts. We're all doing original music, no cover tunes. Expect a 20 minute or so set from each of us. What's the reason for this mega-lineup? Since the beginning of the One Mike Stand series at The House Pub, we've had one bartender, a man we lovingly call Butters. Well, Butters is leaving us soon for Colorado and we wanted to make his last One Mike Stand a special one. He has long been involved with Project Mobility, an organization that builds specialized adaptive bicycles for kids and adults with physical challenges. In his honor, we're donating the proceeds from the evening to Project Mobility. We'll be raffling off some great prizes kindly donated by The House Pub, Kiss the Sky (great record store in a brand new location), the Steel Beam Theater, Grand Victoria Casino, Kevin's Auto Service, Eaglewood Resorts, Geneva Running Outfitters, and original prints by local artists Herb Kelly and George Barthel. All of the raffle money will also go to Project Mobility. So please come on out, hear some great original music performed live, enjoy (responsibly, of course) some adult beverages, and help out a great cause while you're at it!

I'll be doing a brief (30 min) set opening for Peter, and then I'll probably pop back up later to sing some harmonies with him. I'm a late edition to the bill and tickets have been on sale for some time now, so I'm sorry to say that all the reserved tables and seating have already sold out. Standing room tickets are still available, but probably not for long!

Full band show! Introducing The Lonely States: Scott Stevenson on keys, Tim Mulvenna on drums, and Tommi Zender on bass. New songs and old favorites - including a few we haven't played in years. Following us is Shana Gray & Under The Radar. Some of you may remember Shana from when she sang with me at the Edie Carey show. A few years ago she made an album called "Valiant" and she's finally ready to play those songs to the world. Shana will probably sing with me on a few tunes during our set as well. Closing out the evening is Tom McCarthy & Luminance Ensemble. You could stay home and watch AmeriKareoke Idol, or you can come hear some great singers in person, singing original songs.

USA
847-492-8860
Price: $20 reserved/$12 general admissi
Host Ingrid Graudins says, "January's chill goes away when your heart is full from an evening of music from real songwriters performing their songs "living room style" in the round, at SPACE. This forum consists of beautiful music, some story telling, some light interviewing, as well as a breezy confessional or two in most cases (!!) that can never be duplicated. Each show is unique and unforgettable." I'm honored to be one of the guests for this show alongside Anna Fermin, Al Day, and Andrew Kerr. Ingrid kicks the show off, then she'll bring us out. We'll go four times around the circle with songs and stories, and then we'll all play something together at the end. It ought to be a lot of fun. Hope you can make it out!

One Mike Stand - featuring Bob Kuhn - 7 PM
16 S. 1st Avenue
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-945-3479
Price: zip, zilch, nada, nothing
Some of you might know Bob as part of Dick Smith, but that's just one facet of what he does. We've played together in various bands over the years, including Suspicious Bag (we were oh, so loud) and our current side-project Fudgie & Delicious. Bob will be the featured performer at October's One Mike Stand and I'll be playing bass (weird huh?) and singing with him on part of his set. Also joining Bob are Gerald Dowd, Scott Stevenson, Chris Walke, Dave Nelson, Dave Ramont, and Scott Tipping. Your host, Mike Alberts, will kick things off with his AMP band. The House Pub features the giant Wall-O-Beer, so you must be 21 to attend.

St. Charles, IL 60174

Flipped a coin with Scott Tipping as to who would play in June and who would take July. I either won or lost, it remains to be seen. Bring your father with you if he's around! Mike Alberts (he literally puts the "Mike" in "One Mike Stand") and his band kick the evening off.

Price: Free

We're trying something new. Readings from author Christine Sneed, interspersed with music from Dave Ramont and myself. Christine's got a fantastic, award-winning short story collection out entitled Portraits of a Few of the People I've Made Cry.

If you don't have it yet, you should. Don't panic though, I believe she'll be bringing some copies with her.

One Mike Stand - featuring Scott Stevenson - 7PM
16 S. 1st Avenue
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-945-3479
Price: No Cover
Scott Stevenson headlines May's One Mike Stand. You may know Scott as the keyboard player on my records, but he does a whole heck of a lot more than that. He's got a jazz record, a "perpetual calendar" record, writes cantatas, directs choirs, and he plays and records in all sorts of musical genres with all manner of talented folks. So come on down, I'll even be singing with Scott on a few tunes.

Shane Leonhard Memorial Concert - 8PM
106 South 1st Ave.
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-513-0074
Price: $5 at the door
My friends in Funktional Family have asked me if I'd take part in this concert. Their friend Shane Leonhard passed away suddenly a few months ago - compounding the grief for his family is that Shane's grandmother had passed away two weeks earlier. All proceeds from this show go directly to help his family cover his funeral costs, so even if you can only stop by for a song or two, it'd be greatly appreciated. Also appearing will be Funktional Family and Dave Ramont. Other performers may be added as well.

The House Pub (Upstairs Lounge)
One Mic Stand - 6PM - 9PM
16 S. 1st Avenue
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-945-3479
Price: no cover
Live music... in the suburbs... and you could still be in bed by 10! One Mic Stand is a songwriter showcase and the brainchild of Mike Alberts. Mike has been running One Mic Stand for years at The Grafton in Chicago, next to the Old Town School of Folk Music and decided to give it a go out in suburbia. This will be the fourth One Mic Stand, and the previous three have all been rousing successes - so let's keep that trend going and pack the place once again. The House Pub's Upstairs Lounge is a really nice sounding intimate room with big leather chairs and couches. It's in the Arcada Theater building at the corner of Rt. 64 and 1st Avenue - around the corner from Starbucks. Entrance is on the west side of the building (locals will know it as the former home of Scotland Yard). I'm playing in the middle slot with Mike Alberts up front and Michael Heaton closing it out. We'll get things rolling around 6:30, but get there earlier if you want to snag a seat! No cover, free parking and $3 drafts or choose from their huge wall-o-beer, dozens of single malt scotches, bourbons, and other spirits. 21 and over, so line up a sitter now (sorry kiddies).

Whilst in the course of booking shows to promote his new album, "Taw," (look it up) my good buddy Dave Ramont asked if I'd like to do a set at Uncommon Ground the same night as he did, to promote MY new album (still forthcoming...). I checked my busy schedule and managed to squeeze it in. Forget about your holiday shopping for a couple of hours and hear some mighty fine live music in the process.

A Benefit For Fintan Schiltz - 6 PM - 8:30 PM
105 E. Main Street
St. Charles, IL 60174
630-587-8400
Price: $20 adults/$10 kids under 16
My friends Mark & Gina Schiltz had a baby boy, Fintan, born to them late last year. Unfortunately, Fintan had a heart condition that required a transplant. After a long and weary wait, Fintan's family learned he was getting a new heart - on Christmas, no less! The surgery went well, but he's still got a long way to go on a rough road. As you can probably guess, this has been rough on Mark & Gina and their four other kids - both emotionally and financially. To help them in their time of need, some of their friends and I decided to help by doing what we do best - making music. The lineup of performers include me & my band, Dick Smith, Dave Ramont, Robbie Fulks, Perry Jordan (of Heartsfield), Dennis O'Brien, and even Fintan's uncle, Ben Schiltz. Tickets are onsale now. All the proceeds from the show will go to a Fintan Schiltz fund that has been established at Charter One Bank. UPDATE: 4/11/08 - Fintan was released from the hospital yesterday! He and his family will be staying for a week at Kohl's House to "train" them on how to take care of Fintan. Though he's coming home soon, he still needs our help! If you can't make it to the show, or want to help out even further. You can stop by any Charter One Bank branch or mail a check to the following address (be sure to include account #4500232949 on your check): Remittance Processing Department Charter One Bank PO Box 42006 Providence, RI 02940-2006
